Delhi to have 20,000 smart street lights by Diwali: Parvesh Sahib Singh

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) The Delhi government has set an ambitious target of replacing 20,000 old and dysfunctional street lights across the city by Diwali, as part of its larger plan to transform the national capital's street lighting system with smart technology, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Thursday.

Under the Smart Street Light Project, the PWD is replacing one lakh old street lights with smart LED lights, and the entire target is scheduled to be completed by January next year.

The new system will bring a major change in the way street lights are monitored and maintained, with a centralised Command and Control Centre at PWD headquarters, which is going to monitor the functioning of the lights in real time.

“By Diwali, our target is to replace 20,000 old street lights with smart lights across Delhi. The biggest change will be the centralised monitoring system. Every street light will be monitored in real time, and any malfunction can be identified immediately," Singh said, adding that "The system will also allow remote control of the lights, enabling faster response and maintenance.”

Under the new arrangement, the status of street lights will be continuously tracked through the control room, reducing dependence on citizens having to report faulty lights and enabling the department to identify and address failures proactively.

The Minister emphasized that the new system will address problems of Delhi’s street lighting network, especially to help remove the dark spots caused by dysfunctional lights.

“Earlier, there was no mechanism for real-time monitoring. In many cases, information about a faulty light reached the department only after a complaint was received. With the new system, the department will know about the problem and can take action without waiting for a complaint,” Singh said.

This technically advanced project will also reduce the recurring expenditure on electricity and maintenance.

According to officials, replacing conventional sodium lights with energy-efficient smart LED lights is expected to result in annual savings of around Rs 30 crore in electricity and maintenance costs.

The project has an estimated cost of around Rs 473 crore, which includes five years of operation and maintenance.

The payment mechanism has also been designed to ensure accountability from the agency executing the project. The private company installing the smart lights will receive monthly payments only after the installed lights are fully operational.

The Minister said improving street lighting is directly linked to road safety and the safety of women, particularly on roads and stretches where inadequate illumination has remained a concern.
