For Mahatma Gandhi, Swaraj meant everyone treated with dignity: Delhi LG

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu today inaugurated the Sadbhavana Sammelan at the historic Gandhi Ashram of the Harijan Sevak Sangh, Kingsway Camp, in the presence of the National President, of the organisation, Dr. Sankar Kumar Sanyal and others.
The LG recalled that the Harijan Sevak Sangh was founded in 1932 through the efforts of Mahatma Gandhi, at a time when he had built a nationwide movement against social discrimination.
Sandhu said that for Gandhi, freedom and Swaraj meant that every individual in society be treated with dignity, and that many of India's leading freedom fighters had come to this very place to meet him.
He underlined that country's freedom struggle for political independence was accompanied by a parallel struggle for social unity, equality and brotherhood.
The LG recalled that Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya had presided over the historic meeting in Bombay at which the Harijan Sevak Sangh was established, following the signing of the Poona Pact between Madan Mohan Malviya and Dr. BR Ambedkar to address the concerns of the depressed classes, with the larger objective of building a society free from untouchability, exploitation and segregation.
He said Gandhi, Malaviya and Baba Saheb, in their different ways, were working towards the same objective of ensuring that political freedom was accompanied by greater equality and dignity in Indian society.
The LG said he saw a similar connection in the life of his own grandfather, Sardar Teja Singh Samundri, an important leader of the Gurdwara Reform Movement, whose work extended beyond religious reform into social welfare, education and the fight against caste barriers, rooted in the belief that institutions serving the community must be open, accountable, and grounded in equality.
He recalled that when his grandfather had learnt that Dalits in his area were not permitted to draw water from the common well, he had personally led them to the well, asked them to draw water and drunk it first, a powerful and, for the early 1900s, unthinkable assertion of equality and dignity.
The LG also cited Malaviya's own words describing SardarTeja Singh Samundri as the greatest towering leader among the Sikhs.
The LG emphasized that the struggle for a better India could not be separated from social harmony and dignity and that Sadbhavana remains relevant today not merely as a matter of living together, but of ensuring that every individual is treated with dignity, respect and a sense of belonging.
Quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to build "an India rooted in justice, harmony and service to humanity," the LG said the country's youth have the most important role to play in carrying these values forward, not merely as history, but as a part of their own lives.
