Govt refutes reports on missing cancer drugs in Delhi cancer institute

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) The Delhi government's Health Department on Thursday rejected media reports claiming a state cancer institute is missing essential medicines, including cancer drugs, painkillers, IV fluids, and antibiotics.
Denying the media report, the Delhi government said in a statement that it does not reflect the complete and current status of medicine availability.
"Statements attributed to the Director, DSCI were misinterpreted and taken out of context and are strongly denied," it added.
Issuing a clarification, the government said both cancer drugs and pain management medicines are available at the institute, including Tamoxifen, Abiraterone, Irinotecan, Morphine, Tramadol, Fentanyl patches and iron preparations.
However, the authorities accepted that some antibiotics mentioned in the media report are presently unavailable, while adding that substitute antibiotics are available at the Institute to meet patient requirements.
The institute acknowledged an overall 90 per cent availability of essential medicines for both OPD and IPD wards.
Officials also admitted some medicines are missing, including an anti-cancer drug, Leuprolide, which is under procurement and is expected to be available shortly.
However, the statement did not provide a deadline for availability of short-stock items.
On Wednesday, citing the institute's Essential Drug List (EDL) for September 21, a daily newspaper reported that 48 key medicines of 178 listed drugs were out of stock.
The report stated that the list of unavailable medicines ranges from commonly used IV fluids and pain relievers to targeted cancer medicines.
According to the report, DSCI Director Dr Savita Arora said the hospital is exploring procurement of the costly medicines through GeM and other government-approved channels to secure better rates.
She said direct purchases from local chemists are generally avoided under government procurement norms, while supply orders for some of the medicines listed have already been issued following scrutiny. UNI MBJ SAS
