Four children among 10 injured as glass tank breaks during mermaid show at UP fair

Bahraich, Nov 3 (UNI) At least 10 people, including four children, were injured after a glass water tank shattered during a mermaid show at an Urs fair in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday night.
The incident took place around 9 pm in Khalepur village, under the jurisdiction of Fakharpur police station, nearly 20 km from the district headquarters.
According to eyewitnesses, around 20 people, including several children, were watching the performance when the glass tank suddenly broke, sending water and shattered glass into the audience. Children seated in the front rows bore the brunt of the incident, suffering head injuries and cuts from glass shards that pierced their faces. The girl performing inside the tank was also injured.
The four injured children have been identified as Arsh (8), Burau (7), Ahad Khan (8) and Mohammad Sadiq (9), all residents of Khalepur village. They were admitted to hospital for treatment, while the other injured persons were discharged after receiving first aid.
Police said a three-day fair is organised every November in Khalepur village to commemorate the Urs, or death anniversary, of Dada Miyan. The annual event attracts an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 visitors. A mermaid show was introduced at the fair for the first time this year.
During the performance, a girl dressed as a mermaid performed tricks inside a water tank reportedly measuring 20 feet in length and 10 feet in width, with a capacity of 20,000 litres. The tank featured an exterior glass wall, and tickets for the show were priced at Rs 50 per person.
Fakharpur police station in-charge Rajkumar Rajbhar said the organisers had not obtained the necessary permission to conduct the show.
Police have registered a case against five people, including Urs Committee president Wajid Khan and show operator Shadab. The operator has reportedly been absconding since the incident.Further investigation is underway.
