From waste to wealth: Bhiwani farmers get Rs 142 Crore boost as treated water project unlocks 5,300 acres

Bhiwani, Oct 30 (UNI) In a massive push for sustainable agriculture and rural prosperity, the Haryana Government has showered Bhiwani district with development projects worth over Rs 142 crore, with the crown jewel being a first-of-its-kind irrigation initiative that will turn treated wastewater into a lifeline for thousands of farmers.
The landmark announcement comes as Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini inaugurated six completed projects worth Rs 133.66 crore and laid the foundation stone for two new projects worth over Rs 8.46 crore, aimed at accelerating the district's overall development.
However, the farmer-centric irrigation project is being hailed as a game-changer for Bhiwani's agrarian landscape.
At the heart of this agricultural transformation is the Rs 84.33 crore Treated Wastewater Irrigation Project, inaugurated at the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) located on the Bhiwani-Charkhi Dadri Road.
Under this innovative scheme, 30 million litres per day (MLD) of treated water from the STP will now be channelled directly to irrigate agricultural fields, providing a reliable and alternative water source to farmers who have long battled depleting groundwater levels.
"This is not just an infrastructure project; it is a lifeline for our fields," said Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Chaudhary, expressing deep gratitude to the Chief Minister for prioritising farmer welfare.
"For years, our farmers have depended on unpredictable rainfall and fast-depleting tubewells. Today, we are giving them water security through resourceful innovation."
The project is set to directly benefit approximately 5,300 acres of fertile agricultural land.
Farmers from Haluwas, Prahladgarh, Nimriwali, Dhana Narsan, Rupgarh, Dhirana Kalan, and surrounding villages will now receive a steady supply of treated water for irrigation.
Officials say this will drastically reduce dependence on groundwater, conserve precious freshwater reserves, and promote environmentally friendly farming practices across the region.
Agricultural experts have welcomed the move, noting that using treated wastewater for irrigation not only solves water scarcity but also reduces the burden on natural aquifers.
"When a farmer gets an assured source of irrigation without digging deeper for groundwater, his income becomes predictable and his land becomes sustainable. This is climate-smart agriculture in action," said a senior official from the Irrigation Department.
Minister Shruti Chaudhary emphasized that the state government remains committed to water conservation, environmental protection, and farmer prosperity through effective management of water resources.
She appealed to the farming community to recognize the value of every single drop, use irrigation water judiciously, and actively participate in conservation efforts.
For the farmers of Bhiwani, who form the backbone of the district's economy, the Rs 142 crore package signals more than just government spending.
It represents hope, stability, and a future where agriculture is no longer a gamble against nature, but a secure livelihood backed by visionary policy.
With the treated water set to flow into the canals before the next cropping cycle, Bhiwani is poised to become a model for sustainable, farmer-first development in Haryana.
