Gurukul Kurukshetra blends Gen Z aspirations with Vedic values, produces 150 Army officers: Gujarat Governor

Kurukshetra, Nov 1 (UNI) Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat on Sunday highlighted Gurukul Kurukshetra's unique education model, which combines modern career-oriented learning with traditional Vedic values, discipline and physical fitness, saying the institution has produced 150 lieutenants for the armed forces.
Addressing the centenary commemoration of freedom fighter and social reformer Swami Shraddhanand's martyrdom and the 114th foundation anniversary of Gurukul Kurukshetra, Devvrat said the institution has transformed from a struggling establishment with just 60 students into a prominent educational centre with around 1,500 students.
He said the Gurukul's education system prepares students for careers in defence, technology, engineering and medicine while instilling patriotism, moral values and a sense of national service.
President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the year-long martyrdom centenary celebrations, which will be organised in different parts of India and abroad. Haryana Governor Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were also present.
Highlighting the institution's growing popularity among younger generations, Devvrat said between 12,000 and 13,000 students sought admission every year, although only about 250 could be accommodated.
He said Gurukul Kurukshetra followed the CBSE curriculum in English while retaining its emphasis on yoga, Vedic education, discipline and physical training.
Recalling the institution's difficult past, the Governor said he had joined it as principal at the age of 21, when it had only 60 students and faced the prospect of closure because of financial difficulties and encroachment on its land.
"When I came here at the age of 21, there were only 60 students. The institution was in a very poor condition and was on the verge of closure," Devvrat recalled.
He said he spent 22 years travelling from village to village, collecting wheat and rice from residents to sustain the institution.
"For 22 years, I went from village to village, collecting wheat and rice and carrying it on my shoulders. Today, this institution has established its identity not only in India but across the world," he said.
Devvrat said the Gurukul had since expanded into a network of four institutions, comprising three for boys and one for girls.
Highlighting its contribution to national defence, he said a National Defence Academy preparation wing was established following a visit by union Home Minister Amit Shah about seven years ago.
"Till now, we have given 150 lieutenants to the Indian armed forces," the Governor said.
He also cited the achievements of 147 students in pathways associated with IITs, NITs and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
Devvrat claimed that the institution maintained a strong academic record, with students consistently securing first-division results.
Explaining the Gurukul's approach to education, he said students began their day at 4 a.m. and participated in yoga, physical training, prayers and Vedic rituals before pursuing their academic studies.
The Governor said the institution's mission rested on three principles: developing students who were morally upright, academically accomplished and physically strong.
He emphasised that modern education and traditional Indian values were not contradictory and could be combined to prepare young people for the demands of contemporary society.
Students, he said, were encouraged to develop respect for parents and teachers, a sense of discipline and a commitment to serving the nation.
The Governor described Gurukul Kurukshetra as his karmabhoomi, recalling his long association with its development and expansion.
Paying tribute to Swami Shraddhanand, Devvrat said the reformer had established the institution in 1912 and dedicated his life to education, the freedom struggle, social reform and the preservation of Indian values.
He said the centenary celebrations would provide an opportunity to carry forward the reformer's mission of preparing educated, disciplined and socially responsible generations.
Devvrat thanked President Murmu for inaugurating the commemorative programme and acknowledged the support of the Haryana government in organising the event.
He said the Gurukul would continue combining modern academic opportunities with character-building and national service, preserving its educational traditions while preparing students for future challenges.
