Father-son booked in Panipat for using fake ‘Govt of India’ plates, sirens on luxury cars

Panchkula, Oct 5 (UNI) Police have booked a father-son duo in Haryana’s Panipat district for allegedly using fake “Government of India” plates, bogus registration numbers and unauthorised sirens on two cars to pose as government officials and intimidate members of the public, police said.
The case surfaced in Samalkha on October 4 after a traffic police team seized an Ertiga and a Ciaz following a tip-off about the alleged misuse of government markings.
According to police, Samalkha Traffic Zone in-charge ASI Satish Kumar and his team were checking vehicles near the Hathwala Road bridge when they received information that Rahul, a resident of Krishna Colony, was allegedly driving an Ertiga carrying a fake government registration plate and posing as an official.
Acting on the information, police reached a lane behind SFC Hotel on Hathwala Road, where they found the Ertiga with “Govt. Of India” written in red on its rear bumper. A Ciaz parked nearby allegedly carried red-and-yellow plastic plates displaying “Govt. Of India PBSM Ministry”.
Police said checks conducted through an e-challan device initially failed to trace records corresponding to the numbers displayed on the vehicles.
Rajbir, a resident of Azad Nagar in Samalkha, subsequently reached the spot and claimed ownership of the vehicles but could not produce their original registration certificates, according to the police complaint.
Investigators then checked the vehicles through their chassis numbers and allegedly found discrepancies between their actual registration details and the plates displayed on them.
Police said the Ertiga, registered in Rahul’s name, was carrying an allegedly fake government-style registration plate bearing HR06GV-7574, while the other vehicle was found registered in Rajbir’s name.
Unauthorised siren-equipped hooters were also allegedly fitted to both vehicles.
The traffic police informed Samalkha police, following which ASI Ashok Kumar reached the spot and examined the vehicles and documents.
Police registered a case against Rajbir and his son Rahul under Sections 204, 319(2), 318(4), 338, 336(3), 340(2) and 345(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 119 and 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The two vehicles have been taken into police custody, and further investigation is underway to determine how the allegedly fake government plates were prepared and whether they were used on other occasions.
