Punjab Police seize 17 kg heroin in 3rd major haul in 4 days

Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) Punjab Police seized 17 kg of heroin and arrested three men in Amritsar today, taking narcotics recoveries by its Counter Intelligence unit to 54 kg in three operations over four days, the state's police chief said.
Police identified the suspects as Prince, Malkit Singh and Rajinder Singh, all residents of Amritsar. A car allegedly used to transport the drugs was also seized.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested accused were allegedly operating in coordination with cross-border smugglers and were receiving heroin consignments for further supply,” Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said.
Counter-intelligence teams acted after receiving information that members of a suspected cross-border trafficking network had collected a heroin consignment allegedly dropped by drone, police said.
Investigators were told that the suspects were expected to carry out a large drug transaction near a flyover on the Amritsar-Tarn Taran road.
Police teams set up a checkpoint and intercepted the car near a park adjoining the flyover, Yadav said. A subsequent search led to the recovery of 17 kg of heroin.
Saturday's operation was the third major seizure reported by Counter Intelligence Amritsar since September 16.
Police arrested four people on September 16 and said they recovered 27 kg of heroin, a foreign-made .30-bore PX5 pistol and three cartridges. Another suspect was arrested with 10 kg of heroin on September 18.
The three operations have yielded 54 kg of heroin, according to police figures.
“We are establishing the backward and forward linkages, and further investigation is underway to identify other persons involved and neutralise the cross-border drug-smuggling network,” Yadav said.
A case has been registered at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar under Sections 21, 25 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Police did not disclose the estimated value of the seized heroin or identify the alleged cross-border suppliers.
The court has not tested the allegations against the arrested men.
