UP plans National Tribal Culture showcase to mark Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2026

Lucknow, Oct 28 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh is preparing a national showcase of tribal performances, crafts and cuisine from November 23, 2026, as part of its Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas celebrations.

The proposed festival would put tribal artists, artisans and traditional food makers at the centre of a public platform recognising the communities who sustain India’s tribal heritage.
The Janjatiya Mahotsav is expected to bring together around 470 artists from 16 states and approximately 150 artisans and cooks. Visitors would encounter traditions from across the country, while participating communities would gain an opportunity to introduce their work to wider audiences.

State Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh reviewed preparations on Wednesday, examining participation, cultural exchanges, venue options and coordination among departments.
Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas is observed on November 15, the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The festival connected with the commemoration is proposed after the intervening festive period, with its final schedule and venue still under consideration.
“Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas is an occasion to recognise tribal communities’ contribution to India’s cultural identity. Through this festival, we want artists and artisans to reach wider audiences and help younger generations engage with the traditions, knowledge and skills these communities preserve,” Singh said.
Ten stalls by TRIFED are proposed, adding a showcase for tribal products to the cultural programme. Their inclusion would connect the celebration with the work and livelihoods behind the exhibits, giving visitors an opportunity to explore products alongside performances and food.
The state is also examining participation through the Culture Directorate’s existing agreements with other states. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat are among the options being considered for the theme state.
An international dimension is proposed through invitations to troupes from Nepal and Sri Lanka, as well as foreign groups available in India during the festival period. Preliminary discussions have been held with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
Lucknow would host the programme, with UP Darshan Park, the Gomti riverfront and the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi among the venues under consideration. UP Darshan Park is available from November 23 to 26. A coordination committee involving the departments and institutions concerned is proposed to oversee preparations and participant arrangements.
