Amit Shah to inaugurate 1857 martyrs' memorial in Ambala on Nov 5 Anil Vij announces public rally at Ambala Cantonment;

Ambala, Oct 29 (UNI) union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the 'Azadi ki Pehli Ladai ka Shaheed Smarak–1857' in Ambala Cantonment on November 5, Haryana Energy Minister Anil Vij announced on Thursday.
A public rally will also be held at Gandhi Ground in Ambala Cantonment following the inauguration.
Vij said the memorial would honour the freedom fighters of the 1857 uprising whose sacrifices, he maintained, had not received adequate recognition.
He added that the Haryana government would arrange visits to the memorial for students from educational institutions across the state at government expense.
Addressing mediapersons in Ambala Cantonment, Vij said the memorial had been developed to showcase the events and sacrifices associated with the 1857 uprising through modern technology.
Spread over approximately 22 acres, the complex has 22 galleries depicting different aspects of the revolt and the struggle against British rule.
Vij said nearly 700 names of martyrs had been compiled following research with the assistance of historians from across the country. Their names, along with their fathers' names and villages, will be inscribed in golden letters at the memorial.
He added that further names could be included if additional evidence emerged after the inauguration.
Explaining the historical significance of Ambala, Vij cited research by historian Dr K.C. Yadav, former head of the Department of History at Kurukshetra University, which, he said, indicated that the uprising began in Ambala Cantonment approximately nine hours before the events in Meerut.
He also referred to a document he said he had obtained from the National Archives, which reportedly records the killing of 135 soldiers of the 5th and 60th Native Infantry at Ambala's parade ground in September 1857.
According to Vij, 33 soldiers were taken prisoner and around 40 escaped. The minister said the government had decided to facilitate visits by students from colleges, polytechnic institutes, engineering and medical colleges, and other educational institutions at public expense.
School students would also be taken to the memorial to familiarise them with the history of the freedom struggle.
Vij said the initiative aimed to preserve the legacy of the 1857 uprising and ensure that the sacrifices of lesser-known freedom fighters were remembered by future generations.
