Himachal govt removes MGNREGA work condition, raises income ceiling under welfare scheme

Shimla, September 26 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday announced the removal of the mandatory one-day MGNREGA work condition for availing benefits under the ‘Mukhya Mantri Ka Apna Parivar Sukhi Parivar Yojana’ and raised the family income limit under the scheme from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000.Addressing a large public meeting at Kansa Chowk in Balh Assembly constituency of Mandi district, the Chief Minister said the changes had been made to facilitate more eligible families to avail the benefits of the welfare scheme.
He also announced that all eligible women above the age of 21 would be provided a monthly pension of Rs 1,500.
Sukhu said the state government was committed to ensuring the welfare of vulnerable sections of society and was implementing various schemes for employees, pensioners, orphaned children and widows.
He said the Congress government had been working to make Himachal Pradesh self-reliant while curbing corruption and ensuring that people received their rights.
The Chief Minister also indicated that a pending instalment of Dearness Allowance for state government employees would be released soon.
He said employees would be able to celebrate Diwali well this year and claimed that the financial position of the state was improving.
Sukhu said the Congress government had taken several decisions keeping in view the problems faced by ordinary people. He recalled that the Cabinet, in its first meeting after assuming office, had decided to restore the Old Pension Scheme for government employees.
He alleged that the previous BJP government had pushed Himachal Pradesh into a debt trap and misused the state’s resources. During the previous regime, the state had received around Rs 60,000 crore through GST compensation and Revenue Deficit Grant, but the money was not utilised properly, he alleged.
Sukhu said his government had firmly faced both natural disasters and political challenges.
During the disaster, around 23,000 damaged houses were rebuilt using the state’s own resources, he said.
Referring to the Kishau Multipurpose Project, the Chief Minister said the state government had strongly protected Himachal Pradesh’s interests and claimed that around Rs 3,000 crore in expenditure had been saved for the state. He said the project could generate annual revenue of around Rs 1,200 crore to Rs 1,500 crore for Himachal Pradesh in future.
Sukhu also announced recruitment to 800 posts of police constables and said an MRI machine costing Rs 23 crore was being installed at Nerchowk Medical College.
He said hospital staffing had increased from around 35 per cent of the required strength during the previous BJP government to around 60 per cent under the present government, with a target of taking it to 80 per cent.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister announced several development projects for Balh, including Jal Shakti Department and Electricity Board divisions and a DSP office at Nerchowk.
He announced Rs 3 crore for irrigation and drinking water schemes, Rs 1 crore for a dumping site, Rs 50 lakh for repair of Kansa Stadium and Rs 3 crore for repair and maintenance of roads.
The Chief Minister also announced Rs 60 lakh for metalling and paving of the Ridoo, Nalu and Saryad roads and Rs 35,000 each for Mahila Mandals present at the programme. A CBSE school would be opened at Gurkota from the next academic session, he announced.
