Shimla, Oct 1 (UNI) An inter-ministerial central team led by M Ramachandrudu, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, met Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu here on Thursday and discussed the damage caused by natural calamities in Himachal Pradesh during the monsoon season.
The Central team had visited disaster-affected areas of the state in September to assess the damage caused by natural calamities. During the meeting, Sukhu held detailed discussions with the team regarding the disasters experienced by the state during the monsoon season. The Chief Minister said the impacts of climate change were becoming increasingly evident in Himachal Pradesh and stressed the need for a scientific study of the rising incidents of cloudbursts in the state. He also called for revision of the criteria for release of disaster relief assistance by the Central Government, saying the geographical and climatic conditions of hill states were different from those of the plains. Sukhu said Himachal Pradesh played an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of northern India and providing clean air. He also emphasised the need for construction of more tunnels during the development of highways in the state. The Chief Minister's discussions with the Central team covered the state's concerns over disaster relief assistance and the need to take into account its distinct geographical and climatic conditions while assessing and responding to natural calamities. Chief Secretary K.K. Pant, Director, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Prakash Chand, Director, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Dr Subhash Chandra, Director, Ministry of Rural Development, Ramavatar Meena, Director-cum-Special Secretary, Disaster Management, Pushpender Rana, other members of the Inter-Ministerial Central Team and senior officers of the state government were present on the occasion. Sukhu reiterated the need for a scientific assessment of emerging climate-related challenges, particularly the increasing incidents of cloudbursts, and for disaster relief mechanisms to reflect the specific requirements of hill states. He also highlighted the ecological significance of Himachal Pradesh and the need for suitable infrastructure planning, including greater use of tunnels in highway development, in view of the state's terrain.
