CM Sukhu mourns demise of former Himachal minister Major Vijay Singh Mankotia

Shimla, September 29 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday mourned the demise of former minister and veteran politician Major Vijay Singh Mankotia, who passed away at his native village Tiara in Kangra district this morning. He was 87.In a condolence message, Sukhu said Mankotia had made significant contributions to the development of Himachal Pradesh, particularly in the Shahpur Assembly constituency of Kangra district.
The Chief Minister said Mankotia’s contributions towards the welfare of society would be remembered by the people for a long time.
Sukhu expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty to grant peace to the departed soul and strength to the family members to bear the irreparable loss.
Major Vijay Singh Mankotia had a long political career in the state and was elected to the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha five times.
He contested the Shahpur Assembly constituency as an Independent candidate in 1982 and won the election. He joined the Congress in 1985 and won the seat again.
In 1990, he joined V P Singh’s Janata Dal and won the Shahpur Assembly seat for the third time.
He subsequently rejoined the Congress and won the Shahpur seat in 1993 and again in 2003.
He served as Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation and Law from 1995 to 1998 and again from March 2003 to July 2004.
