Haryana Police turns saviour, brings power back to over 100 villages hit by electricity strike

Neeraj Bali
Chandigarh, Oct 23 (UNI) As a strike by electricity employees disrupted power supply across Haryana, the state police emerged as an unlikely crisis manager, mobilising retired power utility employees, junior engineers and technical experts to restore electricity, bringing relief to more than 100 villages in Rewari district alone.
Stepping beyond its conventional law enforcement duties, Haryana Police coordinated with electricity department officials to repair faults, restart feeders and protect critical infrastructure as prolonged outages affected households, drinking water supply and essential services in several districts.
According to information released by Haryana Police on Friday, all six feeders at the Bhadawas power house in Rewari were made operational, restoring electricity supply to more than 100 villages.
In Kaithal, police-assisted restoration efforts brought three of the four feeders at the 66-kV power station in Baliyar Kalan back into operation, providing relief to residents struggling with disrupted electricity supply.
The intervention came amid a three-day strike by electricity employees protesting the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission's decision to grant a parallel power distribution licence to a private company for Gurugram and Nuh districts.
The strike, which began on Thursday, has disrupted electricity supply in several parts of the state, with residents complaining of prolonged outages, unattended faults and interruptions to drinking water supply.
In Hisar, personnel from Adampur police station coordinated with electricity department officials to restore power to the police station and surrounding areas.
Police also facilitated repairs to a generator at the waterworks facility in Mahavir Colony, enabling the resumption of drinking water supply to affected residents.
In Karnal, police personnel were deployed at various power houses to safeguard electricity infrastructure and facilitate restoration operations.
Teams from Assandh and Nissing police stations, along with the Sadar Bazaar police post, coordinated with electricity officials to address power-related complaints and help restore essential services.
Similar efforts were undertaken in Panipat, where police assisted electricity department personnel in tackling supply disruptions.
Officials said the police were coordinating with retired electricity employees, junior engineers and other technical specialists to identify and rectify faults, particularly where the strike had affected routine maintenance and emergency repair operations.
The involvement of retired technical personnel has become an important part of the administration's efforts to keep essential electricity infrastructure functioning during the industrial action.
Haryana's Director General of Police said the force was committed to maintaining public order while helping residents cope with the disruption.
"Haryana Police is ready round the clock, 24×7, to maintain law and order and provide relief to the general public," the DGP said.
The police response comes as the state government seeks to resolve the dispute over private participation in electricity distribution in Gurugram and Nuh.
Electricity employees have opposed the parallel distribution licence, raising concerns about its implications for the existing public power distribution system.
The government, meanwhile, has been attempting to address the employees' concerns and prevent further inconvenience to consumers.
Police officials said assistance to electricity authorities would continue wherever necessary, with priority being given to restoring disrupted supply, protecting power installations and ensuring the functioning of essential services.
While the police reported significant restoration work in several districts, the total number of consumers who remained affected by the strike was not immediately available.
The episode has placed Haryana Police in an unusual role, with personnel not only maintaining security during the industrial action but also helping bring electricity and drinking water services back to affected communities.
