Punjab Police arrest 296 suspected drug smugglers, seize heroin and 120 kg cannabis

Chandigarh, Oct 26 (UNI) Punjab Police arrested 296 suspected drug smugglers and seized substantial quantities of narcotics during statewide operations on Monday, as its anti-drug campaign entered its 604th day.
The seizures included 3.5 kg of heroin, 120 kg of cannabis, 44 kg of poppy husk, 500 grams of opium and 1,722 intoxicating tablets, according to an official police statement.
Police also recovered ₹13,850 in suspected drug proceeds during the operations.
The department claimed that the cumulative number of arrests under the Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign had reached 88,285, although it did not provide updated figures for prosecutions or convictions.
The campaign combines enforcement operations targeting narcotics trafficking networks with measures intended to encourage treatment and rehabilitation for people affected by substance dependence.
As part of Monday's rehabilitation initiative, police said 32 individuals had been persuaded to undergo treatment for drug dependence.
"Police have convinced 32 persons to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment today," the official statement said.
The latest seizures underscore the continuing challenge posed by heroin trafficking and the availability of other narcotic substances across Punjab.
While the government has repeatedly highlighted arrests and drug recoveries as evidence of intensified enforcement, the effectiveness of the campaign also depends on successful prosecutions, disruption of supply networks and sustained rehabilitation.
Police did not disclose the locations of Monday's major seizures or identify the alleged trafficking networks involved.
The department said operations against drug trafficking would continue across the state.
