Rising gold prices reshape wedding jewellery buying, spur demand for lightweight designs

Shimla, September 19 (UNI)Rising gold prices are influencing wedding jewellery purchases, with buyers showing greater interest in lightweight designs, transparent valuation and old-gold exchange, said Verma Jewellers Managing Director Akshay Verma here on Saturday.
Verma was interacting with media during the inaugural of the four-day wedding jewellery exhibition being organised by Verma Jewellers at Shimla, from September 19 to 22.
The exhibition features more than 5,000 designs covering diamond, polki, jadau, temple, traditional yellow-gold and silver jewellery.
He said customers were increasingly seeking jewellery that offered a combination of design, quality and affordability amid the rise in gold prices.
The company, he said, had focused on lightweight designs that retained the appearance and craftsmanship of heavier traditional pieces.
“Today the question is not only about the price. Customers want to know where they can find the best designs, whether they have to travel outside the state and, most importantly, whether they are getting the right quality. Transparency has become a major concern,” Verma said. The exhibition brings a range of bridal jewellery under one roof, with the company’s in-house design team available to assist visitors with jewellery selection and styling.
The organisers have described it as the company’s largest wedding jewellery exhibition so far.
He said preparations for the exhibition had been underway for nearly six months and the event followed what the company described as a strong response to its recent exhibition in Solan.
The company has also introduced an old-gold exchange programme as part of the exhibition said Verma, adding that the customers could exchange existing gold jewellery for new pieces, with the old jewellery melted in their presence and its purity checked through a karat meter.
“The valuation is done transparently, and there is no deduction under the offer,” he said. Verma said gold recycling through exchange could contribute towards reducing dependence on newly imported gold.
He also referred to earlier appeals for greater recycling of gold and reduction in imports.
The company is also offering insurance on jewellery purchases above Rs 25,000, Verma said, adding that the facility was aimed at addressing concerns over carrying expensive jewellery during weddings and other occasions.
The exhibition also includes a draw in which 10 brides-to-be can win diamond mangalsutras. Registration is required for participation, but no purchase is necessary, according to the organisers.
Verma Jewellers, part of the Naresh Chand Verma Group, has its roots in Solan and also operates in Rohru. The exhibition is being held ahead of the peak wedding season, when jewellery forms an important part of wedding preparations.
