Uttarakhand to map 100 new trekking routes, 1st state to develop app for easy access to more than 100 hill treks

Dehradun, Sep 18 (UNI) Uttarakhand government today launched a hunt for identifying 100 major trekking and hiking routes, mainly in the hilly areas, to enhance the scope of adventure tourism in the state.
The beginning of hunt for new trekking routes took off after a team of experts was flagged off by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for mapping and survey of the tracks. They will create a data base as Uttarakhand is set to become first state in the country to create an app to access the new hill treks.

Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board will conduct ground surveys of selected trekking 100 routes and prepare detailed GPS and GIS mapping for these tracks as it sent off an expedition of specialist to carry out the task. Most of these tracks are in the high altitude areas.
The expedition teami will conduct GPS and GIS mapping along with technical survey at 100 major trekking and hiking routes across the state.
"Uttarakhand possesses immense potential for adventure tourism. We must exploit technology to bring state's popular trekking sites, remote and lesser-known tracks on tourism map in a structured manner. This will help make trekking safer, easier and better organised,"said Dhami.
The Chief Minister said that besides promoting tourism, safety of the tourists remains top priority of the state government.
"Scientific mapping of trek routes will not only provide trekkers essential route information but also lead to more effective relief and rescue operations during emergencies," said the Chief Minister.
He informed that besides tourism development, government is attentive towards preserving Uttarakhand's sensitive Himalayan ecology.
Dhami added that besides boosting tourism in remote mountains of the state. It will create new employment opportunities for local youths as tourist guide, homestays and other tourism-related ventures.
Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Garbyal informed, "a GPS and GIS mapping along with technical survey of 100 major trekking and hiking routes in the state will be carried out by the expedition team. Following this, a GPS navigation app will be developed by the department. This will help trekkers access to vital trails and route information on their mobile phones even without network connectivity as the App will function offline as well."
"Uttarakhand will be first state in the country to develop an offline and online GPS navigation app covering 100 mapped trekking routes for the global trekkers. The app will provide better navigation facilities and will be useful for rescue operations" added Garbyal.
