Cyclonic storm brewing in Bay of Bengal, likely to approach Andhra-Odisha coast by Oct 28: IMD

Panchkula, Oct 23 (UNI) A cyclonic storm is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal by October 26 and move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts over the following two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on Friday, forecasting very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across several southern and eastern states.
The IMD's latest weather bulletin, issued at 9.08 a.m. on October 23, said a low-pressure area had formed over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal early Friday morning and was expected to intensify progressively over the next three days.
The system is likely to become a depression on October 24, strengthen into a deep depression on October 25 and develop into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26.
"It would then continue to intensify further and move west-northwestwards towards North Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts during subsequent 2 days," the IMD said.
The department has not yet specified a landfall location or timing, indicating that the system's movement and intensity will require continued monitoring.
The IMD warned that coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam could experience isolated very heavy rainfall during October 23-28, with heavy to very heavy rainfall also forecast on October 29.
Odisha is expected to witness increasing rainfall activity from October 26, with widespread rainfall and isolated heavy rainfall forecast during October 27-29.
The department has warned of thunder squalls in Odisha during October 27-29, with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph.
Strong surface winds are also likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on October 23 and 24.In southern India, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to receive isolated heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall between October 23 and 26, while Kerala and Mahe face similar conditions until October 25.
Lakshadweep is also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on October 23 and 24. The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall over south interior Karnataka during October 23-25 and coastal Karnataka on October 23. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during October 23-28.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to receive widespread rainfall throughout the forecast period, including isolated heavy rainfall until October 26.The developing weather system has also prompted warnings for fishermen in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea.
Squally winds reaching 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, are forecast along and off the Kerala and Karnataka coasts, over Lakshadweep, and in the Comorin area adjoining the Maldives until October 27.Similar conditions are expected over the Andaman Sea during October 23-27 and several parts of the central and adjoining Bay of Bengal during the subsequent days.
The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the affected sea areas during the warning period.Meanwhile, rainfall recorded during the preceding observation period indicates that southern India is already experiencing significant weather activity.Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu recorded 8 cm of rainfall, followed by Kannur in Kerala with 7 cm and Minicoy in Lakshadweep with 6 cm.
Cuddalore, Adirampattinam, Nellore and Tirupati recorded 5 cm each, while Kochi, Karaikal, Madurai and Port Blair received 4 cm each. The department warned that prolonged heavy rainfall could cause localised flooding, waterlogging, landslides and disruption to road and rail transport.
Strong winds could damage vulnerable buildings, uproot small trees and affect standing crops, horticultural plantations and coastal activities.
"People are advised to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and be ready to move to safer places accordingly," the IMD said.
Farmers in the affected states have been advised to maintain proper drainage in agricultural fields, protect harvested produce and avoid fertiliser application and pesticide spraying during periods of heavy rainfall.
Fresh western disturbance to affect north India from October 24
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast a fresh western disturbance affecting northwest India from October 24, even as largely dry weather is expected to prevail across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring areas during the coming week.
According to the department's meteorological analysis, an upper-air cyclonic circulation previously located over Haryana and adjoining northwest Uttar Pradesh was positioned over north Haryana and adjoining northwest Uttar Pradesh at approximately 1.5 km above mean sea level on Friday morning.
The IMD said isolated rainfall was possible over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on October 23 and 24.However, the seven-day forecast indicates predominantly dry conditions across these states and union Territories from October 25 to 29.Uttarakhand is also likely to witness isolated rainfall on October 23 and 24 before dry weather sets in from October 26.
West Rajasthan and east Rajasthan may receive isolated rainfall on October 23, with dry conditions expected throughout the remainder of the forecast period.
The department has not issued any significant weather warning for northwest India during the week, despite the expected arrival of the western disturbance.
The IMD's temperature observations for October 22 showed that minimum temperatures were largely near normal across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, although isolated locations in Punjab and adjoining regions recorded above-normal temperatures.
Maximum temperatures were also mostly near normal across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, while some parts of Himachal Pradesh recorded above-normal daytime temperatures.
The department said no significant weather activity was expected over northwest, central, western and northeastern India during the week. While southern and eastern coastal states are likely to face intense rainfall and strong winds, most parts of northern India are expected to experience comparatively stable weather conditions, with limited rainfall activity during the next seven days.
The IMD's forecast remains subject to revision as the western disturbance approaches northwest India and the developing Bay of Bengal system intensifies.
