Case registered against Thiruvananthapuram Mayor, BJP councillor over signature forgery

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 8 (UNI) Police have registered a case against Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V V Rajesh, BJP councillor R Sugathan and the Corporation Secretary over an allegation that Sugathan's signature was fraudulently entered in the Corporation council attendance register.
The Museum Police registered the case based on a complaint submitted by CPI(M) councillor and LDF Parliamentary Party leader S P Deepak, police said.
The FIR alleges that the accused conspired to record Sugathan's presence in council meetings held on February 26, March 11 and April 27 by entering his purported signature in the attendance register, although he was not present at the meetings.
The complaint alleged that the entries were made with the intention of shielding Sugathan from possible disqualification on account of his prolonged absence from Corporation council meetings.
Deepak also raised doubts over the authenticity of the signatures, pointing out that the signature in the attendance register was different from the one contained in Sugathan's election nomination papers.
The police action followed a preliminary inquiry initiated after Deepak submitted a complaint to the City Police Commissioner on September 29. The Cantonment Assistant Commissioner, after examining the complaint, recommended registration of a case and a detailed investigation.
The Museum Police thereafter registered the FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita dealing with forgery, creation of false documents and criminal conspiracy.
Police have sought the relevant records from the Corporation as part of the investigation. Statements of the accused are also likely to be recorded.
Sugathan has denied the allegation and maintained that the signature in the attendance register belongs to him. He has sought verification of the signatures through forensic examination and examination of CCTV footage, and said he was ready to cooperate with the probe.
Mayor Rajesh has also denied the allegations. He had earlier said that the signatures could be subjected to forensic verification and that CCTV or other available visual evidence could be examined in accordance with legal procedures.
