Telangana CM Revanth Reddy demands Modi's resignation or removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi/ Hyderabad, Oct 8 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi either remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar or resign from office, alleging that more than 13 crore votes had been deleted from the country's electoral rolls.
Participating in the ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ protest organised by the opposition in New Delhi, Reddy alleged that the deletion of votes was part of a conspiracy to deprive Dalits, Adivasis and minorities of their constitutional right to vote.
He said PM Modi should take moral responsibility for the alleged deletion of voters and warned that people would remove the Prime Minister from office if attempts were made to retain power by using the Election Commission as a shield.
The Chief Minister said the ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ movement was not merely a Congress or INDIA bloc campaign but a movement to protect the voting rights of citizens.
He said the number of voters had increased from 81 crore in 2014 to 91 crore in 2019 and 97 crore in 2024. Against this backdrop, he questioned how more than 13 crore votes could have gone missing when the country's population had reached around 140 crore.
Reddy alleged that the BJP was attempting to deprive marginalised sections of their voting rights through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He specifically alleged that the votes of Dalits, Girijans, Adivasis and minorities were being targeted.
He also alleged that the BJP was dividing people on the basis of caste, religion, region and language and said the country was being pushed into two categories — people with votes and those without voting rights.
The Chief Minister criticised the Election Commission for allegedly refusing to meet opposition leaders who approached it with complaints and alleged police action against leaders questioning the poll panel.
He said raids by the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax Department and Central Bureau of Investigation would not save the BJP government from public opposition and reiterated his demand for the removal of the CEC.
Reddy participated in the protest led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal and leaders of the INDIA alliance also participated.
The leaders marched towards Rajghat and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
