Ex-VP Venkaiah Naidu defends CEC, finds fault with opposition

Vijayawada, Oct 10 (UNI) Former Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu on Sarturday defended embattled Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stating that he was doing his job and found fault with the Opposition leaders for dragging the CEC to the streets, demanding his resignation.

Talking to the media at Atkuru near here, Naidu said that the CEC is a constitutional body and demanding CEC’s resignation without a strong reason is highly objectionable. He took exception to the opposition parties dragging the CEC into controversy for political mileage and also vehemently objected to the demand for repeal of SIR process.
Citing his own experience of being asked for details by the election officials to enroll his name, Naidu said he submitted the documents asked by the election officials. The election officials have no intention of deleting his vote but because of technical reasons they asked for the documen, he explained.
“SIR process is being carried out by the local officials and BLOs in various States. The CEO only formulates guidelines and monitors the process. If there is any technical issue, the local officials and BLOs are to resolve it. Attributing everything to the CEO and demanding his resignation is absurd and objectionable,” Venkaiah Naidu opined. He also vehemently took exception for demanding the resignation of Prime Minister and Home Minister by the opposition leaders.
Naidu pointed out that the CEC takes decisions collectively and they have also made it clear. Slamming the opposition parties, for making false allegations without showing evidence, he objected to humiliating the CEC with baseless charges.
“When the Opposition parties win elections, the CEC is functioning well. They lose elections, they blame CEC and EVMs,” he said adding that the opposition parties can demand to simplify the process but should not demand the CEC’s resignation, he felt.
