VP launches Nepal relief, humanitarian initiatives of Mata Amritanandamayi Math

Kollam, Sep 27 (UNI) Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan on Sunday launched a series of humanitarian initiatives of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, including Rs 2 crore assistance for flood relief in Nepal, free surgery support for underprivileged patients and financial aid to fishermen’s families, at a function held at Amritapuri here.
Addressing the Vishwa Seva Dinam celebrations organised to mark the 73rd birthday of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Radhakrishnan said the world needed “compassionate advancement” along with technological progress and stressed that the journey towards a Viksit Bharat must ensure that no one was left behind.
He said the real measure of Seva lay not merely in the number of people served or the scale of humanitarian programmes, but in the transformation brought about in individual lives.
The Vice-President said the Math had provided charitable medical care worth more than Rs 890 crore since 1998, benefiting over 64 lakh people through free treatment and surgeries.
He also highlighted the Math’s other major initiatives, including the construction of more than 50,000 homes for homeless people, over 55,000 scholarships worldwide, pensions for more than one lakh impoverished people and livelihood programmes for disadvantaged communities.
During the function, Radhakrishnan handed over the Rs 2 crore assistance for Nepal flood relief to Nepal Ambassador to India Surender Thapa. He also distributed certificates for free surgeries at Amrita Hospitals in Kochi and Faridabad to underprivileged beneficiaries and financial assistance to families of fishermen.
He released the Amritakuteeram 30th Anniversary Souvenir, marking the completion of 50,000 homes across India and Sri Lanka, besides three Ashram publications -- The Hanuman Chalisa, The Ocean of Grace and Satyam Shivam Sundaram.
Paying tribute to Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the Vice-President described her life as a message of love, compassion and selfless service and said the spirit of Seva was deeply rooted in India’s civilisational ethos.
He recalled that even from childhood, Amma had responded to the suffering of people around her by providing food, clothing, affection and compassion.
Radhakrishnan said the humanitarian work of the Math had grown from the compassion of a young girl in a village into a movement touching millions of lives in India and across the world.
He particularly highlighted AmritaSREE, under which around 2.5 lakh women from poor and vulnerable communities had been supported through start-up capital, vocational training and microfinance. More than 15,000 Self-Help Groups were functioning under the initiative, he said.
“When a woman becomes economically empowered, the impact extends far beyond the individual,” he said, adding that Nari Shakti was about empowerment, dignity, opportunity and leadership.
The Vice-President said the Math’s service had extended to education through scholarships, tablet-aided learning, after-school tutoring, adult literacy and vocational training, creating new opportunities for disadvantaged communities.
He said the true test of Seva often came during times of crisis and recalled the Math’s relief and rehabilitation efforts following the Indian Ocean tsunami, Gujarat earthquake, Uttarakhand floods, Kerala floods, COVID-19 pandemic and Wayanad landslides.
He also referred to the Math’s contribution of Rs 100 crore to the Government of India’s Namami Gange programme and its environmental initiatives, including cleanliness drives, sustainable rural living programmes and tree plantation.
Under the Amala Bharatam initiative, he said, numerous cleanliness drives had been conducted across the country, while more than 10 lakh trees had been planted worldwide as part of the UN Billion Tree Campaign.
Radhakrishnan said Seva transcended caste, creed, language, region and nationality and recognised only one identity -- humanity. He described this as the underlying philosophy of Vishwa Seva Dinam.
Referring to conflicts, humanitarian crises, natural disasters, displacement, poverty, loneliness and environmental challenges confronting the world, he said technological advancement alone could not address humanity’s needs.
“Humanity needs compassionate advancement,” he said.
The Vice-President said India’s progress towards Viksit Bharat required infrastructure, technology, investment, innovation and economic growth, but development should also have a human face.
He stressed the need to ensure that modernity and India’s civilisational values moved together and said “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” should guide the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat.
Concluding his address, Radhakrishnan offered his pranam to Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, describing her as a “miracle”, and expressed the hope that her service-oriented movement would continue to reach millions of people and contribute to a more peaceful, sustainable and compassionate world.
Governor of Kerala and Tamil Nadu Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister V D Satheesan, union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi, Kerala Assembly Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, state ministers, Kerala High Court Justice Gopinath, MPs N K Premachandran and Shashi Tharoor, Nepal Ambassador Surender Thapa, MLAs, Swamijis, devotees and volunteers attended the function.
