Soybean crop burnt in 50 villages of Tuljapur over demand for drought relief

Dharashiv, Sep 20 (UNI) The Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana on Sunday staged a protest by burning damaged soybean crops in around 50 villages of Tuljapur taluka in Dharashiv district, alleging that a prolonged dry spell had caused extensive losses to soybean growers.
The protest was organised to draw the government's attention to the difficulties faced by farmers and to protest what the organisation described as a delay in announcing relief measures. Farmers and activists demanded that the government immediately declare a drought-like situation in the taluka and provide financial assistance to affected growers.
The organisation has sought compensation of Rs 1 lakh per hectare for farmers whose soybean crop has been damaged. It has also demanded a complete farm loan waiver, citing the financial burden faced by cultivators following crop losses.
Another major demand is payment of 100 per cent crop insurance compensation for the damaged soybean crop. The organisation has demanded that the insurance amount be credited directly to the bank accounts of eligible farmers without further delay.
According to the organisation, the prolonged gap in rainfall has severely affected soybean cultivation in several parts of Tuljapur taluka. In many fields, the crop has reportedly dried up or suffered extensive damage, raising concerns over a sharp decline in production and farm incomes.
The burning of the damaged soybean crop in the villages was intended as a symbolic protest against the government's handling of the situation. The organisation said the government should conduct an immediate assessment of crop losses and announce relief based on the actual extent of damage.
The Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana warned that the agitation would be intensified if its demands were not addressed promptly.
