Maha: 19 more talukas added to drought-hit list after Ministers raise concerns

Mumbai, Oct 2 (UNI) The Maharashtra government has expanded the list of drought-hit talukas by adding 19 more talukas following strong demands raised by several ministers.
The government has directed officials to conduct a detailed assessment of the agricultural situation in the newly included talukas.
Officials have been instructed to undertake a 20 per cent survey of the state’s five major crops in each taluka, conduct physical inspections in the affected areas and submit their reports to the government on an urgent basis.
The decision to expand the drought-hit list came after several ministers reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the exclusion of certain talukas from the initial list of 265 despite the prevalence of adverse agricultural conditions and inadequate rainfall.
Among the newly included areas are Mudkhed, Mukhed and Ardhapur talukas in Nanded district.
The three talukas are part of the district represented by BJP leader and former chief minister Ashok Chavan.
The revised list also includes Jivti, Brahmapuri and Ballarpur talukas in Chandrapur district.
The district includes constituencies represented by BJP leader and MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar as well as Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar.
Patán taluka in Satara district, represented by Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai, has also been brought under the expanded drought assessment.
Officials have been asked to assess the condition of the five major crops grown in the respective talukas through field-level inspections. The exercise is expected to provide the government with updated information on crop losses and the extent of the drought-like situation before further relief measures are considered.
The inclusion of the additional 19 talukas is significant as the government had earlier faced criticism over the criteria used to identify drought-affected areas.
The latest decision indicates that the administration has opted for a fresh ground-level assessment in areas where ministers and local representatives have raised concerns about crop conditions.
Earlier, the Maharashtra government had officially declared 265 talukas as drought-affected.
