Washim farmers seek drought declaration, stage protest during Fadnavis' visit

Washim, Sep 24 (UNI) Farmers in Maharashtra’s Washim district on Thursday urged the state government to declare the region drought-hit and provide immediate relief, staging a protest during Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ visit to inspect crops affected by deficient rainfall.
Fadnavis toured parts of Washim and neighbouring Amravati district in the Vidarbha region to assess the impact of deficient rainfall on standing Kharif crops.
During the visit, he reviewed soybean, cotton and pigeon pea fields and interacted with cultivators facing losses due to the prolonged dry spell.
At Mhasla village in Karanja taluka, a group of farmers intercepted the Chief Minister’s convoy and raised slogans pressing for an official drought declaration.
They later submitted a memorandum seeking a compensation package of Rs 50,000 per hectare for affected cultivators.
Farmers said the extended absence of rainfall had severely damaged Kharif crops, with soybean suffering extensive losses across the district.
They urged the government to take immediate measures to address the agrarian crisis and provide financial support to distressed farming families.
Responding to their concerns, Fadnavis assured the farmers that the state government was fully aware of the situation and would extend all possible assistance.
He said relief measures would be provided to affected farmers and reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the agricultural sector during the drought-like conditions.
