BMC tightentens noose around polluting construction sites, deploys 76 inspection squads

Mumbai, Oct 23 (UNI) In a bid to contain construction-related dust pollution ahead of the winter season, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stepped up enforcement across Mumbai by introducing a 28-point regulatory framework for construction and demolition sites and deploying 76 ward-level squads for surprise inspections.
The civic administration has cautioned that developers, contractors and site operators found flouting the prescribed pollution-control norms could face show-cause notices, suspension of construction activities through stop-work orders or sealing of their premises.
The intensified drive is aimed at ensuring that construction and demolition activities do not contribute excessively to the city's air pollution, particularly during the winter months, when weather conditions can aggravate the accumulation of pollutants.
