Elderly Vasai man ends life after years of alleged abuse by son and his friend

Mumbai, Oct 6 (UNI) An 84-year-old man died by suicide after allegedly enduring mental and physical harassment by his son and the son's friend for several years in Vasai. Before his death, the senior citizen met his daughter and handed her a bag containing important documents, money and a suicide note, police said.
The deceased was identified as Gabriel Dominic Coutinho, 84.
According to a complaint lodged by his daughter Rupa Noel Chirayat, her brother Shyam Coutinho had allegedly been harassing their father over minor issues for the past 12 to 13 years.
The complaint stated that on September 26, a dispute arose over broken egg shells, following which Shyam allegedly assaulted his father.
Shyam's friend Sagar subsequently allegedly joined him in beating the elderly man. The two were also accused of taking away Coutinho's food plate, leaving him without food and forcing him out of the house.
On September 28, Coutinho met his daughter near her school and handed her a bag, telling her that it contained important documents and money. He then went to Naigaon Railway Station, where he jumped in front of an approaching local train and died on the spot.
When his daughter later examined the bag, she found a suicide note in which Coutinho allegedly stated that he was ending his life because he could no longer bear the harassment by his son Shyam and his friend Sagar.
A video purportedly documenting the alleged harassment has also surfaced and circulated widely on social media.
Following the incident, Bhayander Railway Police registered a case against Shyam and Sagar on charges of abetment of suicide.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the allegations and the circumstances leading to Coutinho's death.
