FDA Seizes Adulterated Food Worth Rs 30 Lakh Across Maharashtra, Five Mumbai Eateries Face Licence Suspension

Mumbai, Sep 22 (UNI) Amid the festive season, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has launched an intensive state-wide enforcement drive, seizing suspected adulterated, misbranded and substandard food items worth Rs 30.81 lakh, while licences and registration certificates of five establishments in Mumbai have been suspended for serious violations.
In a press note issued on Monday, the FDA said action was taken against 18 establishments across five divisions - Brihanmumbai, Pune, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur.
In the Brihanmumbai Division, the licences and registration certificates of five establishments were suspended with immediate effect for serious Schedule 4 violations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The establishments were M/s Gurukrupa Dairy Products in Malad East, M/s Gufran Seekh Corner in Versova, which was found operating without a valid licence, M/s BJRS Gallops Restaurant inside Mahalaxmi Racecourse, M/s Dreamer Hospitality Pvt Ltd in Bandra West and M/s Mirari in Bandra West.
The biggest seizure was made in Malad East, Mumbai, where FDA officials raided M/s Gurukrupa Dairy Products at Pandit Solitary Lane. Nearly 4,646 kg of adulterated and mislabelled ghee, refined sunflower oil and vanaspati worth Rs 15,15,597 were seized. According to the FDA, the unit was blending refined sunflower oil, vanaspati or hydrogenated fat and branded ghee in two boilers to manufacture counterfeit white and yellow ghee. The products were allegedly sold under misleading labelling as Pooja Ghee in small print. FDA officials also found rats and cockroaches infesting the premises. Two boiler machines and one khoya machine worth Rs 1.60 lakh were also seized.
During the inspection of BJRS Gallops Restaurant, FDA officials found blood and ketchup stains on ice in a refrigerator. Raw material was found in torn packaging, while grease accumulation, cockroaches, ants and water stagnation were also observed.
In Chandrapur, 3,310 kg of suspected substandard tea powder worth Rs 6,75,790 was seized from the godown of Ashok Agro Products.
Under the Pune Division, action was taken against six establishments in Sangli, Pune and Kolhapur. Food stock worth Rs 4,71,223 was seized, including jaggery, peda, besan laddu, khoya, modak, ghee and skimmed milk powder.
Similar seizures were carried out in Jalgaon, Nanded, Gondia, Gadchiroli and Nagpur. The seized items included mawa peda, buffalo ghee, khawa, soybean oil, groundnut, chilli powder, paneer and motichoor laddu.
FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said playing with the health of consumers and the public would not be tolerated under any circumstances and that such strict legal action would continue.
The FDA has appealed to citizens to register complaints regarding food quality through its toll-free number 1800222365 or through the Food and Drug Grievance Portal.
