Raj Thackeray pays tribute to Nana Patekar, recalls actor’s portrayal of the common man

Mumbai, Oct 8 ( UNI): Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday paid tribute to veteran actor Nana Patekar following his reported death, recalling the actor’s long association with Marathi theatre and Hindi cinema and his portrayal of characters reflecting the social realities of Mumbai and Maharashtra.
In his tribute, Thackeray said Patekar’s career was closely associated with the evolution of Mumbai’s theatre and film culture and with several social and economic phases witnessed by the city over the decades.
“Hindi cinema and Mumbai have long been closely associated. When one speaks of Mumbai, one also speaks of its theatre, its commercial film industry, its middle class and lower middle class living in chawls and slums, and the working class that gradually faced increasing hardships,” Thackeray said.
He said Mumbai’s social landscape also witnessed the emergence of the underworld amid a period of social frustration, changes in social harmony and, later, the expansion of middle-class aspirations following economic liberalisation.
According to Thackeray, Patekar’s presence could be seen across these different phases, both on stage and on the screen.
“From Hamidabai Ki Kothi to Parinda, Krantiveer, Ab Tak Chhappan and eventually Natsamrat, Nana Patekar continued to be seen at different stages of this journey,” he said.
Thackeray said Patekar repeatedly portrayed the ordinary person carrying within him the unease and anxieties generated by the changing social environment.
He described Patekar as an actor who brought to the stage and screen the experiences and concerns of the common man, making his work reflective of the social realities surrounding him.
“Nana Patekar kept portraying the common man living with the restlessness of each of these phases, sometimes on the screen and sometimes on the stage,” Thackeray said.
Patekar, known for his work in Marathi and Hindi theatre and cinema, had a career spanning several decades and was recognised for his performances in a wide range of roles, including socially and politically charged characters. His work in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Ab Tak Chhappan and Natsamrat earned him a significant place in Indian cinema. UNI SP AAB
