Police book Panchkula school management for negligence after assault on six-year-old girl

Panchkula, Oct 31 (UNI) Police have registered a case against the management of a government school in Haryana's Panchkula after a six-year-old kindergarten girl was allegedly brutally assaulted by an eight-year-old Class III student, with a preliminary investigation revealing negligence on the part of school authorities.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Aditi Singh said the case had been registered under relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following the October 28 incident at the Government School in Sector 20.
"During the preliminary investigation, negligence on the part of the school administration has come to light. Accordingly, an FIR is being registered under the relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and the BNS," Singh said.
The girl, who suffered serious injuries in the assault, is undergoing treatment at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
"The girl is currently undergoing treatment at PGI, Chandigarh, and is out of danger. Her parents are with her, and she is safe," the DCP said.
According to police, the incident occurred on October 28 when the eight-year-old boy allegedly attacked the girl inside a classroom.
Reports said the child was repeatedly struck with hard objects, including stones and a flowerpot, leaving her severely injured.
Singh said the boy involved in the incident was undergoing a psychological evaluation by experts in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.
"The eight-year-old student is undergoing a psychological evaluation by experts. Further proceedings will be undertaken in accordance with the findings and the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act," she said.
The police action follows growing concern among parents over the school's safety arrangements, supervision of younger students and the circumstances in which the assault went unnoticed.
The Haryana government has also constituted a committee to investigate the incident.
Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda has said that those found responsible for negligence will face action. The Haryana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has separately taken cognisance of the matter.
Singh announced that Panchkula Police would introduce a detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) for all schools in the district to strengthen child safety and prevent similar incidents.
"A detailed SOP will be issued, and compliance will be mandatory for all schools in Panchkula," she said.
Police will also organise sensitisation and outreach programmes for teachers and students to improve awareness of child safety and strengthen preventive measures within educational institutions.
"Children's safety is our topmost priority. We will ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly and impartially and that the safety of children in schools is maintained," Singh said.
She assured parents that the investigation would be carried out with seriousness and impartiality and that appropriate action would follow against those found responsible.
