Political tussle within the SP-Cong alliance over seat-sharing in UP polls

By Manoj Bhadra
Lucknow, Oct 4 (UNI) Even as the talks over seat sharing within the INDIA alliance was yet to begun for Uttar Pradesh assembly polls , a political tussle appears to be brewing within the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance over seat-sharing.
The dispute cropped up after some Congress leaders demanded that they should be given at least 150 seats. The demand was raised after the new state president Aradhana Mishra Mona took over the reigns of the party 2 days back.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday issued a significant message regarding the seat-sharing arrangement within the alliance. He stated that the number of seats the alliance wins or which party wins is irrelevant. The most important thing is to ensure the alliance's victory.
Akhilesh Yadav posted on the social media platform X, saying that when the objective is clear, the journey is easy; if the focus is on the destination, the journey is smooth. All the parties in the alliance must work together to ensure the victory of the alliance.
He reiterated, "It's not about seats, it's about winning." He said that this victory will be more than just a victory for the coalition parties, but a victory for the combined efforts of all those who are constantly fighting.
Yadav also mentioned communalism, democracy, the Constitution, and reservation in his message. He said that the effort is to ensure that communalism never raises its head again and that democracy, the Constitution, and reservation are not harmed by the BJP.
He also spoke about maintaining harmony in the country and advancing progress and prosperity. At the end of the post, Akhilesh Yadav wrote, "Victory to the Constitution, Victory to India!"
On the other hand responding to Congress's claim of contesting 150 assembly seats, Samajwadi Party MP from Pratapgarh, SP Singh Patel
said that even winning 50 seats would be a significant achievement for the Congress, given its current political strength and organizational standing in UP.
Patel said that seat sharing in the alliance should be based on the political parties' grassroots strength and organizational strength. He also called for limiting Congress to 10 to 20 seats. His statement has sparked speculation about differences between the SP and Congress over seat allocation in Uttar Pradesh.
Patel's statement is also raising political questions about whether the two parties will easily reach an agreement on seat sharing in the upcoming assembly elections. With the Congress claiming a majority of seats in Uttar Pradesh and the Samajwadi Party rejecting its claim, the picture regarding the alliance's strategy remains unclear.
The SP MP's statement also cited past experiences of alliances with Congress. SP leaders alleged that Congress sought the support of the SP and regional parties when needed, but did not adequately consider the expectations of allies when seat-sharing was discussed.
The SP also gave the example of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, where, according to the party, its delegation had held talks with the Congress leadership regarding seats during ticket distribution, but it did not get any seat.
The SP MP's statement has sparked a new debate about the future of the alliance in Uttar Pradesh. While a formal seat-sharing formula between the two parties has not yet been revealed, a period of pre-election bidding and political pressure has already begun between the allies. UNI MBD SAS
