Swami Prasad Maurya's Apni Janata Party to contest UP assembly polls under India bloc

Lucknow, Oct 4 (UNI) The Apni Janata Party (Rashtriya) led by former Uttar Pradesh minister Swami Prasad Maurya, will contest the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections in alliance with the opposition All India Alliance.

The Apni Janata Party (Rashtriya) leader met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath on Saturday. A formal announcement of the alliance will be made during Navratri.

According to sources here on Sunday, after discussions between the Congress high command and SP President Akhilesh Yadav, an agreement has been reached to include Maurya in the India Bloc.

Maurya will contest the elections on his party's symbol but will field joint candidates with the alliance.

Speaking to the media, Swami Prasad Maurya said that the Congress Party is the only option facing the country at the national level. Therefore, he decided to join the India Bloc. He added that his party is now part of the India Bloc. The future strategy and the number of seats he will contest will be discussed in detail in the coming days.
Mr Maurya said that opposition parties have only one objective: remove the BJP, save the country, and save the Constitution.
" Today, Rahul Gandhi is the only one raising the voice of minorities, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and backward classes in the country. His party is doing the same in Uttar Pradesh. Therefore, we will contest the elections with an alliance based on similar ideology," he said.

Swami Prasad Maurya is a prominent leader of the Kushwaha, Maurya, Shakya, and Saini communities. He has a vote bank of approximately 8-9 per cent in Uttar Pradesh.

He was in the BSP and a close associate of Mayawati. But he joined the BJP in 2016 before the 2017 assembly polls. In 2022, he left the BJP and joined the Samajwadi Party, then formed his own party, Apni Janata Party.
