Punjab counter-intelligence ASI shot dead in Tarn Taran; gangster's alleged claim under scrutiny

Chandigarh, Oct 11 (UNI) A 55-year-old Punjab Police assistant sub-inspector (ASI), posted with the Counter Intelligence wing in Ferozepur, was shot dead by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants in Tarn Taran district on Sunday evening, barely a month after his nephew was killed in a separate shooting.
The deceased, identified as ASI Iqbal Singh, a resident of Naushera Pannuan, was returning home on his motorcycle after completing duty when the attackers intercepted him near the Patwarkhana on the Naushera-Lohka road at around 7.30 p.m. and opened fire.
Singh sustained two bullet injuries and died at the scene, police said. The assailants fled under the cover of darkness.
Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police Surinder Kumar Lamba, who reached the spot, said investigators had obtained some leads and were working to identify and arrest those responsible.
"The ASI sustained two bullet injuries. We have obtained some clues and the accused will be apprehended soon," Lamba said, according to the account of his statement.
The killing has raised questions about a possible connection with the September 11 murder of Singh's nephew, Ajmeet Singh, who was also shot dead by motorcycle-borne attackers.
An accused in the earlier case was subsequently arrested after being injured during a police encounter. Investigators have not established whether the two killings are connected or whether the latest attack was motivated by revenge.
Meanwhile, a social media post circulating under the name of gangster Doni Bal has purportedly claimed responsibility for the ASI's murder.
The message, reportedly circulated through an account bearing the name Gopi Ghanshyam, also mentioned several alleged gang associates. However, the authenticity of the post, the identity of its author, and the claim of responsibility have not been independently verified.
Police have not officially confirmed the involvement of Doni Bal or any particular gang in the killing.
Patti Deputy Superintendent of Police Ravi Sher Singh said a case had been registered and the crime scene secured for forensic examination.
"A case has been registered, and evidence is being collected from the spot," the DSP said, according to the reported account of his remarks.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby locations and routes that may have been used by the attackers.
The motive remains unclear, and police are examining multiple possibilities, including whether the killing had any connection with the earlier murder in the officer's family.
The attack has once again brought the security of police personnel and the continuing threat posed by organised criminal networks in Punjab into focus.
No arrests in the ASI's murder had been independently confirmed at the time of filing.
