Retaining wall collapses, one dies in Aizawl

Aizawl, May 30 (UNI) A retaining wall collapsed at Thuampui locality on the northern fringe of Aizawl city early Friday claiming the life of a 37-year-old man, while his companion narrowly escaped with serious injuries, as Mizoram grapples with the havoc unleashed by relentless monsoon rains and gusty winds since Thursday, police said.
According to police, the victim, Lalnunmawia (37) from Tlungvel village in Aizawl district, and his friend, Lalfakzuala (35) of Ramthar Veng in Aizawl, had been sleeping inside an abandoned makeshift shelter formerly used by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) labourers when the stone retaining wall adjacent to the hut gave way at around 7:50 AM on Friday.
Despite the pouring rain, local volunteers and a quick response team mounted a rescue effort, pulling out Lalnunmawia’s body from beneath the rubble at 9:55 AM. Lalfakzuala was rescued alive and rushed to Greenwood Hospital, where doctors are treating him for multiple fractures.
The deceased’s body was later transported to Chawlhhmun in western Aizawl, where his sister took custody for the funeral rites.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has caused numerous road blockages across the northern parts of the city, including areas like Zemabawk, Thuampui, Berawtlang, and Ramhlun South. Authorities managed to clear the blockages by evening, restoring access.
Officials from the state disaster management and rehabilitation department reported widespread damage across Mizoram, with reports continuing to arrive of collapsed buildings, residents being evacuated to safer areas due to landslides and falling boulders, and widespread power outages as transmission lines snapped, plunging several towns and villages into darkness.
