Rs 1 lakh cr benefits due to employees grabbed by CPM govt in Kerala: Muraleedharan

Thiruvananthapuram, July 2 (UNI) Financial benefits worth Rs 1 lakh crore due to government employees have been grabbed by the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala, alleged Congress leader K. Muraleedharan.
“There has never been a time when government employees were denied salaries like this. Even the arrears from the last pay revision have not been paid. Despite one full year having passed since the effective date of the 12th Pay Commission – July 1, 2024 – the government has yet to constitute a commission for it,” the former KPCC president said.
Demanding the immediate release of pay revision arrears and pending dearness allowance, he said the government owes employees 18% dearness allowance arrears across six instalments.
As a mark of protest against the government’s financial indiscipline, the Kerala NGO Association staged a Secretariat march as part of the statewide ‘Betrayal Day’ observance, he added.
“For the past six years, benefits including leave surrender have been denied. Uncontrolled price hikes are ruthlessly burdening the common man. The government is completely failing to intervene in the market to control inflation,” he said.
The Left, which had twice promised in its election manifesto to scrap the contributory pension scheme after coming to power, has now been in office for nine years but still refuses to withdraw it, he alleged.
Muraleedharan also criticised the Medisep health insurance scheme, which was introduced during the Congress-led Oommen Chandy government as part of the 10th Pay Commission to provide cashless treatment for employees at any hospital. “It has now been turned into a money-grabbing project,” he said.
He further alleged that the long-standing rules for compassionate appointments have been scrapped and replaced with unscientific and impractical norms, effectively issuing a death warrant to the system.
“With job freezes and the cancellation of PSC rank lists, the youth of the state are being betrayed. The Chief Minister remains oblivious, intoxicated by the sycophantic praises of his supporters. Those masquerading as clowns around him must dare to show him the ground reality,” he said.
While benefits are continuously denied, Left-affiliated employee unions that support the government are mocking the employees. “These unions, which are planning a strike against the central government on July 9, should also prepare to protest against the state government,” he said.
Referring to a recent controversy, Muraleedharan said, “The Health Minister of Kerala even dared to suspend a doctor who publicly stated that surgeries in medical colleges were being cancelled due to lack of equipment. However, when the public and the medical community stood with the doctor, the minister was forced to backtrack, calling it a ‘system failure’. But if the system fails, the responsibility lies with the department and the minister in charge. The Chief Minister should demand the resignation of the Health Minister.”
“This is not merely the opinion of one doctor; it reflects the overall condition of government hospitals in Kerala. Medical colleges are now renting equipment for surgeries. Post-surgical patients are being forced to lie on floors,” he said.
“Two years ago, the Chief Minister proudly claimed that luxury cars like Benz were parked outside government hospitals because the rich were seeking treatment there. But today, for his own treatment, he chose to fly to the USA – not to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College or even to Pariyaram Medical College in his own district of Kannur. This reflects the total collapse of Kerala’s healthcare sector. What was once a model health system has now become an unhealthy, failing system,” he charged.
“With just eight months remaining in this government’s tenure, the people have already rejected them. The UDF’s victory in Nilambur is a clear indication of the end of this Left government,” he said.
Muraleedharan concluded by saying, “The Pinarayi Vijayan government, which has failed in every sector, has no moral right to remain in power. Under the leadership of the Kerala NGO Association, all service organisations must unite and step into the struggle against this anti-people government. Government employees have the power to give this administration a fitting response.”
