Rs 21 crore worth of irrigation canal works underway in Shahpur: MLA Pathania

Shahpur (Kangra), Oct 30 (UNI) Development works worth around Rs 21 crore for the construction and improvement of irrigation canals are underway in Shahpur Assembly constituency to strengthen irrigation facilities for farmers, local MLA and Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania said today.
Addressing a gathering after performing the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a farm link road costing Rs 18.77 lakh for the Amboti irrigation canal at Kalyada, Pathania said works worth around Rs 8 crore were being executed under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), while the Jal Shakti Department was undertaking canal construction and improvement projects worth approximately Rs 13 crore.
He said construction of the Amboti irrigation canal at Kalyada, involving an expenditure of Rs 1.26 crore, was progressing, with nearly 50 per cent of the work completed. The work had been delayed somewhat due to the paddy harvesting season but would now be expedited following the completion of harvesting.
Pathania said most of the development projects being implemented through JICA had been completed, while the remaining works would also be finished soon and dedicated to the public. During his nearly three-and-three-quarter-year tenure, development works worth around Rs 1 crore under JICA had already been completed and handed over to the people, he said.
Explaining the significance of the Rs 18.77 lakh farm link road, he said it would provide vehicular access to agricultural fields, enabling farmers to transport their produce conveniently from farms to their homes and markets. The facility would save farmers considerable time and effort while making agricultural operations easier.
He said expanding basic infrastructure in rural areas and ensuring better facilities for farmers remained among the state government's priorities. He thanked Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Agriculture Minister Prof Chander Kumar for providing funds for the road project.
The MLA also informed that around Rs 70 lakh was being spent on development works at Government Senior Secondary School, Kalyada.
Former Panchayat Pradhan Balvir Chaudhary credited Pathania for various development works undertaken in the panchayat and said the entire Shahpur constituency was witnessing all-round development during his tenure.
Nagarnpat Panchayat Pradhan Sushil also thanked the MLA for the development initiatives being undertaken in his panchayat.
JICA BPM Dr Ankita welcomed the chief guest and briefed him about various development projects and welfare schemes being implemented by the agency in the area.
Kalyada Panchayat Pradhan Neelam welcomed Pathania and honoured him with a traditional shawl, cap and memento. She also highlighted various demands of the panchayat.
JICA District Manager Dr Yogindra Paul, SMS Dr Rajneesh, Jal Shakti Department Executive Engineer Amit Dogra, Rajendra Walia, Gulshan, Adhiraj, officials from various departments, panchayat representatives, a large number of women and other prominent residents were present on the occasion.
