Sikkim government evacuates 28 stranded people from Chaten by special Helicopter

Gangtok, June 8 (UNI) The Sikkim government, in response to a request by stranded taxi drivers, tourists, and locals on Sunday, airlifted 28 people from landslides-affected Chaten to the Pakyong greenfield airport safely, a government communique said.
The government in a special helicopter made two sorties so far and brought back 28 people, mostly tourists and taxi drivers, who were stuck up since May 29 when cloudbursts and landslides ravaged Chaten, about 130 km north at an altitude of 9000 ft high.
" The state, in response to urgent requests from stranded locals, tourist taxi drivers, and government officials at Chaten, has successfully evacuated 28 stranded individuals, including 3 minors. All evacuees have now reached Pakyong Greenfield Airport safely," the statement said.
A special helicopter service was deployed to facilitate this immediate evacuation, ensuring timely assistance to those stranded in the area.
The state has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens and tourists in affected regions.
The operation comes as a part of the ongoing coordinated relief and evacuation efforts being undertaken, given recent adverse conditions that have disrupted normal road connectivity and access to the region.
The aerial evacuation for the taxi drivers happened after the Indian armed forces evacuated about 126 stranded tourists and some 77 personnel between June 3 and
June 7.
