Varanasi: One lakh Chitala fish fingerlings to be released into the Ganga

Varanasi, Oct 6 (UNI) To enrich the aquatic biodiversity of the Ganga and conserve and promote the state fish Chitala, a river ranching program will be organised on October 8 at Assi Ghat in Varanasi.
Approximately one lakh Chitala fish fingerlings will be released into the Ganga.
According to the Fisheries Department, Special Secretary Fisheries Sunil Kumar Verma is scheduled to attend the program. Additional Director of Fisheries Anil Kumar or Deputy Director of Fisheries (Planning) are also expected to attend.
Deputy Director of Fisheries Suresh Kumar stated that river ranching is an effort to increase the Chitala fish population in the Ganga, while strengthening the aquatic ecosystem and biodiversity. He stated that fish play a vital role in the aquatic food chain, and their increased numbers will help maintain the river's natural balance.
He explained that under river ranching, seeds or fingerlings of various fish species are released into rivers. This is expected to conserve fish resources and also support the livelihood of fishermen.
