Yathindra rejects Pramoda Devi’s Jamboo Savari proposal

Mysuru, Oct 26 (UNI) Karnataka Minister in charge of Mysuru district Yathindra Siddaramaiah on Monday rejected erstwhile royal family member Pramoda Devi Wadiyar’s suggestion to shift the Jamboo Savari from Vijayadashami to the day of Rathothsava, while asserting that the government was ready to address her grievances over the conduct of Dasara festivities.
Speaking to reporters here, Yathindra said shifting the iconic procession to the chariot festival day would not be feasible, though he clarified that the view was his personal opinion and that he was yet to discuss the matter with Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.
He also rejected the suggestion to restrict cultural programmes at Mysuru Palace to the first seven days of the Dasara festivities, maintaining that the government had the authority to decide how the festival should be conducted.
Pointing out that the palace and the Palace Board, barring the portion allotted to the erstwhile royal family for its residence, belonged to the Karnataka government, he said the administration would take the final decision on the conduct of the celebrations.
However, he stressed the need for cooperation between the government and the erstwhile royal family to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual festivities, which involve both public celebrations and traditional religious rituals performed by the royals.
Responding to reports that Pramoda Devi Wadiyar had indicated the possibility of approaching the court or withholding the golden howdah, or Ambari, used in the Jamboo Savari, Yathindra said the government would deal with the situation if it arose.
“There is no need for the erstwhile royals to resort to such extreme measures. The government is ready to resolve their grievances,” he said.
Clarifying the arrangement for the golden howdah, the minister said the government paid the erstwhile royal family for its use during the procession and did not receive it free of cost.
He recalled that the Karnataka government had been officially organising Dasara as Nada Habba since the early 1970s, while emphasising that due respect had always been accorded to the royal family.
Yathindra said government representatives remained in regular contact with the erstwhile royals, including Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, ahead of the festivities to seek their cooperation and understand their expectations.
He said her concerns could have been brought directly to the government's attention instead of being communicated through the media.
The minister maintained that this year's Dasara celebrations had concluded smoothly, except for the controversy surrounding the cancellation of Vajramushti Kalaga on Vijayadashami.
He said the government would either send an official emissary to meet Pramoda Devi Wadiyar or issue a formal response to the grievances raised by her.
