Konkan Railway to be merged with Indian Railways: Fadnavis

Mumbai, Mar 19 (UNI) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday announced in the Maharashtra Legislative Council that the Konkan Railway Corporation will be merged with Indian Railways as per the central government's proposal to solve the problem of shortage of funds for future projects.
While replying to a query raised by member Praveen Darekar in the upper house regarding the Konkan Railway Corporation, he informed that the Konkan Railway Corporation was established with the cooperation of four states namely Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala.
However, due to financial crunch and lack of funds, the Corporation is facing difficulties in implementing future projects, and to solve these problems, the central government has decided to merge the Konkan Railway with Indian Railways, he said.
Following the proposed merger, the Railways will be able to invest large amount of funds in various schemes of Konkan Railway such as construction of double tracks, implementation of accident prevention measures, modernisation of stations and other important development works, which will be completed in time, he informed.
After the merger, the name of Konkan Railway will remain the same and its autonomy will be maintained.
In regard to proposed merger, Fadnavis said that the states of Goa, Karnataka and Kerala along with Maharashtra have agreed to this proposal and the final proposal will be communicated to the central government soon, he added.
