Meghalaya Minister blames Biren Singh for Manipur violence

Shillong, Apr 1 (UNI) Meghalaya Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister, Marcuise Marak, on Tuesday accused former Chief Minister and BJP leader, Nongthombam Biren Singh, of the ethnic violence in restive Manipur.
Marak’s accusation against Biren Singh was made after he accused former Lok Sabha Speaker (Late) P.A.Sangma of advocating the division of the northeast along ethnic lines.
“He (Biren) has created the mess in Manipur, everyone knows that. Now he is blaming PA Sangma, who is no longer with us in this world. This is totally unacceptable,” Marak told reporters.
“I totally condemn his (Biren) statement against late Purno Agitok Sangma and I, on behalf of the NPP (National People’s Party) demanded a public apology for his unwarranted statement,” the veteran NPP legislator demanded.
Recalling the former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A.Sangma as a “leader of utmost integrity”, Marak said, “PA Sangma was a national leader who worked tirelessly for the people of North East and always tried to unite people across the country.”
The political controversy has surfaced after Singh, in a post on X accused PA Sangma of advocating the division of the northeast region into smaller states along ethnic lines.
He further accused PA Sangma’s son and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of interfering in the affairs of Manipur.
Biren had even questioned whether the Meghalaya Chief Minister was aware of the security measures being taken in Manipur, stating, “Does Mr. Conrad Sangma know that Manipur had already initiated border fencing? That the Free Movement Regime (FMR) now strictly regulated? Has he noticed the alarming rise in unrecognised villages within Manipur’s borders?”
The Meghalaya Chief Minister, who is also the national President of the NPP, an ally of the BJP, had dismissed the accusations and defended his father’s legacy.
“… the past statement of late PA Sangma regarding the creation of smaller states for different groups was in the context of the demand by different organisations representing different ethnic communities,” Conrad, the youngest son of the former Lok Sabha Speaker, said.
“The way Mr. Biren Singh is trying to portray the situation, while the state is reeling under a difficult phase, is uncalled for. It is clear that he wants to play dirty politics,” Conrad countered.
