ASF outbreak claims 462 pigs in Mizoram, 62 deaths recorded in a single day

Aizawl, Mar 28 (UNI) The resurgence of African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to take a toll on Mizoram’s pig population, with the state registering 62 pig deaths in a single day on Friday. This has pushed the death toll to 462 since the latest outbreak began, according to officials from the state Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department.
The outbreak has hit Lawngtlai district the hardest, with 54 pigs reported dead across six localities in Lawngtlai town, which lies near the Myanmar and Bangladesh borders. Eight more fatalities were recorded in Zawlnuam town of Mamit district, which shares a boundary with Tripura.
Authorities also carried out culling operations in Lawngtlai town, where 26 pigs were slaughtered on Friday to prevent further spread of the highly contagious disease.
