Telangana: CM launches free fine rice distribution scheme in Huzurnagar

Suryapet (Telangana), Mar 30 (UNI) On the auspicious occasion of Ugadi, the Telugu New Year, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy launched the free fine rice distribution scheme at Huzurnagar in Suryapet district on Sunday evening.
Addressing a massive public gathering, the Chief Minister expressed joy at initiating the scheme on Ugadi, stating that quality rice should not be a luxury limited to the wealthy but a staple available to the poor every day.
He emphasised that the Congress party has historically worked towards food security for the underprivileged, recalling that ration shops were first introduced in 1957 under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru. He also acknowledged the contributions of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N T Rama Rao, who, understanding the plight of the poor, introduced the Rs 2 per kilo rice scheme in 1983, a program in which senior leader Jana Reddy played a key role.
Revanth Reddy accused the previous BRS government of mismanaging the state’s paddy stocks, alleging that Rs 21,000 crore worth of paddy was hoarded by millers.
He criticised the exploitation of farmers, pointing out that middlemen purchased paddy rice for Rs 10 per kilo and resold it to the government for Rs 30 per kilo.
He noted that the poor cannot cook thick (doddu) rice, and as a result, they have been exploited by intermediaries. To counter this, he announced that after discussions with his ministerial colleagues, he had decided to provide six kilos of fine rice per person under the ration scheme.
He reiterated that his government’s goal is to ensure that the poor have enough to eat and credited Sonia Gandhi for introducing the Food Security Act to combat hunger.
Taking a sharp dig at former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Revanth Reddy remarked that despite KCR’s claim of reading 80,000 books and understanding Telangana, he failed to provide even a handful of rice to the poor.
He alleged that while KCR discouraged farmers from cultivating paddy, he himself secretly grew paddy on 1,000 acres in his Erravalli farmhouse and sold it for Rs 4,500 per quintal.
He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to farmers, stating that Telangana holds the record for the highest paddy production in the country. To further support farmers, he announced a Rs 500 per quintal bonus for those cultivating fine rice, with Nalgonda district receiving the highest incentives.
Revanth Reddy also accused the previous BRS government of neglecting crucial irrigation projects, particularly the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel.
He claimed that KCR deliberately ignored the project to spite the farmers of Nalgonda and pointed out that if even one kilometer had been dug per year, the 34-kilometer tunnel would have been completed by now.
Criticising former CM K Chandrashekar Rao, he alleged that the Kaleshwaram project had collapsed within three years and mocked it as "Kuleshwaram" instead of Kaleshwaram.
He asserted that even if KCR were to face severe punishment for his alleged mismanagement, it would not be unjustified.
Reflecting on his own political journey, Revanth Reddy recalled how he started as a ZPTC member in 2006 and rose to become Chief Minister in 2024. He reiterated his government’s commitment to providing fine rice to three crore people and highlighted that they had already waived loans for 25 lakh farmers.
He added that Rs 5,000 crore had already been deposited into farmers’ accounts under Rythu Bharosa, with the remaining Rs 4,000 crore set to be credited soon.
The Chief Minister also announced several new initiatives, including an agricultural college for Huzurnagar and a Young India Residential School for Miryalaguda.
He vowed to propel Telangana towards becoming the number one state in India. He stated that despite obstacles, his government was firmly on the path to progress and assured that Congress workers were ready to take on any challenges to continue serving the people.
