Bengal: NIT Durgapur chip featured in memento presented to PM Modi at SEMICON India 2026

Asansol, Sep 18 (UNI) The National Institute of Technology Durgapur (NIT Durgapur) has achieved a major milestone in semiconductor technology, with its indigenously developed chip featured in a special memento presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the inaugural session of SEMICON India 2026.
The fifth edition of the global summit is being held from September 17–19, at Yashobhoomi in Dwarka, New Delhi, bringing together semiconductor companies, researchers, academia, startups and tech professionals from across the globe.
This marks the second consecutive year that NIT Durgapur's research has been spotlighted at the national level. At SEMICON India 2025, the first 'Made-in-India' chip memento presented to PM Modi featured the institute's C2S0029 chip design. This year's memento features its latest chip, C2S0130, a 32-bit Fully Digital Baseband Modulator designed for FPGA and ASIC platforms.
Both chips were developed under the Chips to Startup (C2S) Programme of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
NIT Durgapur's Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering has also successfully taped out a real-world chip titled "Asynchronous FIFO for Forest Event Monitoring".
Prof. Arvind Choubey, Director of NIT Durgapur, commended the C2S project team for the achievement, saying the recognition at SEMICON India 2026 was a proud moment for the department and the institute.
Dr Hemanta Kumar Mondal, Chief Investigator of the C2S project, said the recognition was a landmark milestone and strengthened the institute's commitment to VLSI design, indigenous chip development and semiconductor skill building.
The achievement also highlights the collaborative efforts of the project team, including project researcher Suman Kalyan Porel and core developers Subhadeep Nag and Sapnil Das Choudhury.
The C2S initiative trains students across the complete chip-design lifecycle, from RTL design and simulation to synthesis, verification and implementation, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry demands.
The milestone supports the goals of India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0, which focuses on semiconductor design, research, manufacturing, innovation and talent development. NIT Durgapur supports these goals through specialised academic programmes, advanced VLSI research, modern EDA infrastructure and hands-on chip design and tape-out projects.
