Landslides disrupt roads across Sikkim, Nepal and Bhutan; Lachung drivers lead cleanliness drive

Gangtok, Sep 18 (UNI) Heavy rain over the past two days triggered landslides and road disruptions across Sikkim, Nepal and Bhutan, affecting several key routes and disrupting traffic.
In Sikkim, the National Highway 10, the lifeline connecting the state with Siliguri, was blocked at 20th Mile near Bardang following a massive landslide late Thursday night.
Sikkim Police issued road-condition updates for all five districts — Gangtok, Pakyong, Mangan, Namchi, Gyalshing and Soreng — reporting landslides, mudslides and boulder falls. Several roads have been closed, while traffic on some stretches is being regulated through diversions or single-lane movement.
The situation was also affected in neighbouring Nepal, where a huge landslide at Jamireghat completely blocked the Prithvi Highway, bringing vehicles travelling towards Kathmandu to a halt from both sides.
Dhading Traffic Police Chief Shishir Thapa said it would take some time to clear the debris. Traffic had resumed at Krishnabhir from Wednesday but was stopped again following another landslide. The Muglin-Narayangadh road was also blocked by landslides.
In Bhutan, traffic was temporarily suspended at Penzalum Drubchu along the Dochula-Wangdue PNH due to an active landslide. The Department of Surface Transport advised travellers to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid the affected stretch until it is reopened.
Amid the disruptions, however, drivers in Lachung uniquely marked Vishwakarma Puja. The Owners-cum-Drivers’ Association of Lachung conducted a cleanliness drive from Zero Point to Bhim Nalla, collecting plastic bottles, wrappers and other roadside waste. The initiative aimed at keeping Lachung clean and green while promoting responsible tourism.
The gesture assumes significance as the region battles rain-related disasters and highlights the drivers’ commitment to protecting the environment and sustaining tourism. UNI MBN NST CDS
