Bihar Chief Secretary reviews flood situation, relief & rescue operations

Patna, Sep 30 (UNI) Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit on Wednesday reviewed the flood situation, relief and rescue operations in flood-affected and vulnerable districts of the state at a meeting held through video conferencing at the Disaster Management Department.
District Magistrates of West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Supaul and Saharsa participated in the meeting held here late evening.
The meeting reviewed the prevailing flood situation, relief and rescue operations, the condition of embankments, functioning of relief camps and community kitchens, boat operations and distribution of relief materials in the affected districts.
The District Magistrates briefed the Chief Secretary on the latest situation and the measures being taken by the administration. Amrit directed officials to work with sensitivity and promptness in flood-affected areas and ensure that necessary assistance reaches affected families.
He laid particular emphasis on continuous monitoring of embankments and maintaining heightened vigilance at vulnerable locations to deal effectively with any emerging situation.
Preparations for distribution of the Gratuitous Relief (GR) assistance to flood-affected families were also reviewed.

Officials were informed that the Chief Minister would transfer the GR amount through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) on October 9.
The Chief Secretary directed officials to complete all necessary preparations on time and ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive the assistance as per the prescribed procedure.
The functioning of flood relief camps was also reviewed. At present, six relief camps are operational, providing accommodation, food and medical facilities to around 3,550 flood-affected people.
Amrit directed officials to ensure regular availability of food, drinking water, sanitation and other essential facilities at the camps.
He also stressed smooth operation of community kitchens and timely provision of quality meals to those in need. A total of 100 community kitchens are currently operating in flood-affected areas and have so far provided meals to around 1.40 lakh people.

The Chief Secretary directed officials to further expand the coverage as required.
The operation of boats for transportation and relief activities in affected areas was also reviewed. A total of 221 boats are currently being operated to facilitate evacuation and movement of people.
Officials were directed to ensure adequate availability of boats in areas where required so that affected people do not face difficulties and relief and rescue operations remain uninterrupted.
The distribution of polythene sheets, dry ration packets and cattle feed was also reviewed. More than 2,400 dry ration packets and 10,400 polythene sheets have so far been distributed among flood-affected people as part of relief and rescue operations.

Amrit directed officials to ensure distribution of relief materials and cattle feed according to the requirements of affected families and livestock owners.
The Chief Secretary instructed District Magistrates to maintain continuous vigil over the flood situation and coordinate with concerned departments at the district level for effective implementation of relief and rescue operations.
He said all necessary measures should be taken to ensure that flood-affected people do not face difficulties.
Officials were also directed to regularly review relief and rescue operations, take prompt action according to emerging requirements and maintain continuous monitoring of essential services being provided in the affected areas.
