Student slashes classmate's throat with knife in reputed Kolkata school

Kolkata, Sep 30 (UNI) A dispute over a torn book escalated into a classroom attack at a reputed Kolkata school on Wednesday, with a Class IX student allegedly bringing a knife from home and slashing his classmate's throat.
The incident at South Point High School in south Kolkata has caused a stir across the city, raising serious questions over security in educational institutions. The injured student was rushed to Ruby General Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
According to a complaint filed by the school at Gariahat Police Station, the accused student had recently torn a classmate's book, for which he was reprimanded by a teacher. The victim's father alleged that the accused had "meticulously planned" the attack to kill his son following the scolding.
On Wednesday, the accused allegedly brought a knife from home to school and attacked the victim inside the classroom around 12:30 pm. The victim sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to hospital by the school authorities.
Police sources said the accused student had apparently researched the possible legal consequences before carrying out the attack. He allegedly knew that as a minor accused of murder, he would be tried by a juvenile court and sent to a juvenile home, and believed that he could secure his release before turning 18.
The incident has also raised questions over how the student managed to enter the school premises carrying a knife.
It has also emerged that the accused student's mother died by suicide last year and that a change in his behaviour had reportedly been observed since then.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kunal Agarwal said the accused student is autistic. "The school has filed a complaint and action will be taken according to law," he said.
The hospital in a bulletin said the 15-year-old victim was admitted with a laceration on the neck and on multiple fingers of the left hand. "All the injuries were repaired and the patient is stable presently," it said. UNI BGA/SSP NST CDS
