Meghalaya lawyers declare indefinite strike to oust Advocate General Amit Kumar

Shillong, Sep 30 (UNI) Lawyers across Meghalaya on Wednesday announced an indefinite statewide judicial boycott starting October 1, pressing for the removal of State Advocate General Amit Kumar.
The Joint Executive Committee of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association took this decision on Wednesday after the state government failed to remove the Advocate General
The Joint Executive Committee said that the abstention will not apply to bail and urgent motions, and further announced a mass rally of the legal fraternity slated on October 5 in Shillong.
The resolutions were adopted at an emergent joint executive committee meeting held on Wednesday, in pursuance of the resolution taken at the joint general body meeting of all bar associations of the state held on August 24, where the house had unanimously decided to further pursue the demand for removal of Kumar as Advocate General.
The Joint Executive Committee stated that despite assurances given by the Deputy Chief Minister on September 2, 2026, and subsequently by the Chief Minister on September 16, that Kumar would not represent the state government before any courts pending consideration of the bar's demands, continuous violations have been observed.
“Kumar has been appearing before the High Court as well as the District Court in Shillong. In fact, even on September 30, 2026, Kumar appeared for the State government before the Commercial Court at Shillong which is a total and utter defiance of the assurances given by the Chief Minister,” the Committee said.
Moreover, the committee viewed this violation as a direct disregard of the understanding reached with the Bar, calling it “an open challenge and insult to the entire legal fraternity of the state.”
Noting that the issue raised by the Bar is of grave importance to rectify the system pertaining to, inter alia, the running of the Advocate General's office of the State, welfare and dignity of the legal fraternity of the state, the Committee decided to further pursue the demand for removal of Kumar.
