India continues to facilitate transport of life saving medicines to Iran amid ongoing West Asia conflict: MEA

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) India clarified today that it continues to facilitate the transport of life saving medicines to Iran, amid reports that Iran Air was unable to fly medicines into the country due to the refusal of flight permits for Iranian aircraft in India.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in answer to claims that Iranian aircraft were denied airspace clearance, said:

"We have and continue to facilitate transport of life saving medicines to Iran."
He pointed out that the ongoing conflict in the region has "posed new challenges to the flight connectivity between our two countries"
"We continue to be in communication with our Iranian counterparts to facilitate transportation of life saving medicines as a humanitarian gesture," the spokesperson added.
The response comes as an Iranian official, Taher Abdolhay, managing director of Iran Air (Homa), said on Monday, October 19, that the airline is unable to import medicines into the country due to the refusal of flight permits for Iranian aircraft by India and Singapore.
Abdolhay stated that Iran Air is prepared to transport essential medical supplies from India and other countries to Iran at minimal cost.
Explaining efforts to import pharmaceuticals from India, he said: “For the Mumbai route, a proposal to transport medicine, even via passenger flights, was submitted, but cargo flight permits were not granted.”
On Tuesday, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Iran’s First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of Government meeting in Dushanbe. Rajnath Singh is representing India at the SCO Council of Heads of Government Meeting in Tajikistan.
