First robotic-assisted surgery unit opened in Manipur

Imphal, Sep 18 (UNI) Shija Hospitals & Research Institute today inaugurated Manipur's first Robotic-Assisted Surgery Unit, marking a significant milestone in the state's surgical care landscape.
The unit is equipped with the SSI Mantra 3, a Made-in-India robotic surgical system, bringing advanced robotic-assisted surgery closer to patients in Manipur and the wider Northeast region.
Rajeev Singh Thakur, Chief Secretary, said robotic-assisted surgery marks another significant chapter in Shija Hospitals' journey of surgical innovation.
He noted that the Tripura Government's decision to provide land for Shija Hospitals reflects the trust and credibility the institution has earned through its work, and commended the hospital's efforts to promote inclusive healthcare by extending medical services to remote and underserved areas through health camps.

Dr. Jugindra Sorokhaibam, Director-Medical Services, Shija Hospitals, described the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery as the latest step in the institution's continued advancement of specialised surgical care.
He demonstrated the operation of the robotic system in the operating theatre for the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour, and noted that Shija has assembled a well-trained and certified team of robotic surgeons, nurses and technicians to support the new programme.

The development builds on Shija's long-standing surgical legacy. Since introducing keyhole surgery in Manipur in 1996, the institution has performed more than 44,000 such procedures.

Sumant Singh, Commissioner Health, highlighted Shija's continued investment in technology and specialised healthcare, and emphasised the importance of collaborative initiatives such as PMJAY in expanding access to quality healthcare across the region.

A technical presentation on the SSI Mantra 3 robotic surgical system was delivered by Sourav Mondal, Clinical Engineer, SSI Mantra, who outlined the system's capabilities and its potential benefits for patients, including enhanced precision, visualisation and surgical dexterity.

Dr. Palin Khundongbam, Chairman of the hospital, described the milestone as a significant addition to Shija's specialised surgical capabilities and a reflection of its ongoing commitment to innovation.
He also identified healthcare and education as major sources of economic outflow from the region, underscoring the need to strengthen these sectors locally.
